Keane wins Ron a Split decision

-

and, from Kevin Mirallas’s cross, Rooney headed just wide.

Klaassen almost opened the scoring after 12 minutes when he slid in and just missed connecting with Lookman’s excellent low cross following some tidy link-up play with Rooney.

The lively Lookman looked a consistent threat and his 23rd-minute cross was volleyed just wide by Rooney. Lookman, one of five Evertonians in the England team that won the Under-20 World Cup this summer, continued impressively.

But the goals, and particularly the timing of the second, steadied any nerves and, in lengthy firsthalf added time, Rooney might have claimed a third as Klaassen sent him clear but the striker’s shot was too close to the keeper.

Full-back Cuco Martina picked out Rooney with a cross early in the second half which the striker headed wide. Rooney was edging closer and closer, being caught offside too many times for comfort but, more importantly, Everton maintained the sort of defensive form that had seen them keep three clean sheets in as many games to open the campaign.

Not until the 61st minute did Jordan Pickford have a save to make, but the £30m goalkeeper made it well, diving sharply to keep out a shot from Franck Ohandza as Split threatened for the first time.
