Jailed... death driver rattled by his sat-nav

A DRIVER who killed a father after leaning down to pick up his sat-nav when it fell from his windscreen has been jailed for four years.

Instead of asking his girlfriend to pick up the device soldier Conor Sansom, 21, leaned down himself and swerved across the road, crashing head-on into another car.

Its 49-year-old driver Paul Stevens of Elmstead Market, Essex, was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead in February, 2016. His father Brian suffered serious injuries.

His two daughters Samantha Stevens and Katie Brown, who was 23 weeks pregnant, were also passengers on the way to a car boot sale when the crash happened in Weeley, Essex.

A heartbreak­ing victim impact statement from Miss Brown was read to Chelmsford Crown Court.

She said: “What I saw that day will scar me for ever. No one should have to watch their father die especially not in such an awful way. I lost my dad and gained memories that will haunt me. My daughter lost her grandad, who she will never get to know.”

She has been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder as has Sansom, of Clacton, Essex, who is the father of a 13-week-old daughter.

He was convicted after a trial of Conor Sansom was jailed for dangerous driving after he bent down to pick up his sat-nav and caused a head-on crash that killed a ‘wonderful man’ causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. He was banned from driving for five years.

Judge Jonathan Seely told him: “You must live with the burden of having caused the death of an innocent person for the rest of your life.

“I am quite satisfied that is a heavy burden for you and you are genuinely remorseful.

“If your life is changed forever that is greatly overshadow­ed by the impact of your actions on the victim’s family.
