£42m Sanchez just the start

- Matthew Dunn

TOTTENHAM last night completed the £42million club-record signing of Davinson Sanchez from Ajax but the paperwork will not be in place for him to make his Wembley bow tomorrow.

The Colombia defender, below, still needs to pass a medical and be granted a work permit, but a six-year deal is in place to make him the first of four new signings Mauricio Pochettino says he wants before the window closes at the end of the month.

“I am very excited to be signing for such a famous club,” the 21-year-old defender said. “I am looking forward to working with Mauricio Pochettino and the players and meeting everyone there.”

It is the first signing Tottenham have made this summer and comes after the expectations at the club were questioned by Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.

Yesterday, Pochettino said the Italian had gone out of his way to clarify his comments ahead of their showdown when the pair met at the Premier League launch.

“He did not apologise,” said the Spurs manager. “He explained what he had wanted to say. It was different to how the media had explained it to the fans, and I got his message direct.

“For me it is not a big issue. I don’t believe he wanted to be disrespectful to Tottenham or myself. But having a conversation is good and showing respect is important.”
