Mum who beat cancer killed after falling and hitting head on holiday

- By Tom Tracey

A MUM-OF-THREE died after falling and hitting her head on one of her first holidays since beating cancer.

Liz Cooley, 46, was on a family break in Marmaris, Turkey, last month when she slipped and banged her head.

Liz, of Leicester, was taken to a local hospital where doctors found she had a serious bleed in her brain.

She was flown back to Britain but after a two-week battle to save her life at Leicester Royal Infirmary, she died.

She fought off throat cancer 12 years ago and was left unable to talk after an operation.

Her sister Jill Bryan, 56, said: “She survived the cancer so it was devastating to lose her like this.

“The fall was a complete accident – not related to the cancer at all.

“She was the youngest of eight and we all got on really well.

“We lost our brother David last year so it’s been a really hard time.

“I got a call from a holiday representative in Turkey and we were in a terrible state after the news.

“She had gone with family members for two weeks and she had the fall on her second day.

“She hadn’t been away on holiday for years. It was absolutely devastating – she’s our youngest sister and had already been through so much.”

Four of Liz’s siblings were flown out to Turkey by Thomas Cook after the tragedy on July 14.

Jill said: “The doctors in Turkey did everything they could to try to save her. We spent as much time with her as the hospital would let us.

“I was there four days but Liz never regained consciousness.”
