Windies can crash party

showcased it, but I think the fact he wasn’t over the top in his celebrations just means he’s hungry and driven,” said Law.

“He doesn’t want to stop where he’s at now and that’s a great sign. The challenge for Shai is to stay fit and healthy but if he does that, with the drive he’s got and the mental toughness, that will just make him better and better.”

Law said his side will be inspired, not overawed, by their surroundings this week but between them and victory stands Anderson.

Speaking at Lord’s yesterday on behalf of England Test sponsors Investec, the bowler suggested that he would gladly leave his 500th victim to the winter if Root’s side could secure a series win.

“I know it’s there but I’m trying not to think about it,” said Anderson. “It’s an important game for us that’s the main thing, and I am trying to focus on helping the team towards the win we need. I am a bit of a believer in fate so if it’s meant to be then it will happen but as long as we get the win I am not too fussed.”

Anderson also said he would love to have Mark Wood available for England’s bid to retain the Ashes this winter.

“Mark has had a horrendous time with injuries but I really think he is the one [to make a difference in the Ashes].

“If we can keep him pain free he is our X-factor bowler and I still don’t think we’ve seen the best of him.”
