The colour of your skin shouldn’t matter in court

LEO McKinstry is absolutely right (“All British people should be equal before the law”, September 11).

A country governed by two different laws, one for the black and ethnic minorities and the other for the white British, for the same crime will always remain a country divided, creating a culture of “them and us”.

The very idea that the punishment for the same crime will differ according to ethnic background is as unthinkabl­e as it is unacceptab­le.

Equal legal protection and equal punishment­s for the same crime is what defines a nation as true protector for justice. To do otherwise is an invitation to division and disharmony in society.

We are all citizens of the same country and expect to be treated as such, whatever our ethnicity. Dr Kusoom Vadgama,
