PICKS OF THE DAY Science:

-

Documentary: 100 Year Old Driving School, 9pm, ITV

Some of Britain’s oldest motorists take mature driving tests to determine whether they should still be behind the wheel. In Wales, centenarian Jock Stares (left) travels around the Valleys on his trusty scooter. He celebrates his 101st birthday by taking a speedboat out with his son before taking a motorcycle assessment. In the meantime, Jack Hearn, a sprightly 93-year-old, makes it clear that he has no intention of failing his assessment.

Geography: Robson Green’s Coastal Lives, 8pm, ITV

Rejoice! Robson Green has a new series. One of television’s nicest men is back and this time the Geordie meets people who live on Britain’s coastline, starting out on the Isle of Skye in Scotland where he chats to a family building a timber home in a day. Robson (above) then meets a family of crofters who have lived there for four generations and helps them move their flock of sheep to Staffin Island on a small boat.

Food and drink: The Great British Bake Off, 8pm, C4

Okay, you’ve had two weeks to make a fair judgment about the Channel 4 version of Bake Off. Do Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding (both left) have the right chemistry? Is Prue Leith a suitable replacement for Mary Berry? Are the adverts enough to drive you away? If you’re back for a third slice of this series then chances are the move from BBC1 has not done any lasting damage. The always-smiling Peter was the first to leave the tent and last week saw the end of the road for Chris. Tonight it’s bread week and the remaining 10 bakers will know this is Paul Hollywood’s territory. They face a teacake signature, a two-tiered technical and the most ambitious showstopper ever set in this category.

Royalty: Inside Balmoral, 9pm, Channel 5

In this concluding part of the series we examine the events at Balmoral between 1992 and 2017. The opening year of that particular timescale was a dreadful one for the Windsor family, infamously dubbed an “annus horribilis” by Queen Elizabeth. With a republican feeling growing in the country, many felt the Royal Family, including Charles and his two young sons (above) needed to adapt to survive.

Horizon: Mars – A Traveller’s Guide, 9pm, BBC2

Imagine you were able to journey to Mars – what would you do and how would go about surviving? Tonight, the world’s leading experts such as Dr Kara Beaton (right) discuss what their plans would be if they got the chance to set foot on the red planet. Using real images and data, the programme brings Martian landmarks to life, from vast plains and towering volcanoes to deep valleys and hidden underground caverns.
