Warrington in a coaching crisis
RICHARD AGAR is set to follow Tony Smith out of Warrington and join NRL side St George Illawarra in a senior recruitment role.
With head coach Smith leaving at the end of this season after nine years at the club, his assistant is also on the move next month. It is understood ex-Wakefield, Hull and France chief Agar will be hired by the Dragons, where former St Helens and Castleford boss Ian Millward is head of recruitment.
Agar’s remit in Wollongong will include bringing the best young English players to one of Australia’s biggest clubs. The Dragons already have England internationals James Graham and Gareth Widdop on their books, while Mike Cooper and Tyrone McCarthy have had spells at the club. Agar joined Smith’s staff at Warrington in 2015. Warrington officials have flown out to Australia to interview candidates for the head coaching position. Former Wigan coach Michael Maguire and Canberra Raiders assistant Dean Pay have been linked to the role.
