Cryne’s pain
BARNSLEY owner Patrick Cryne sent an emotional message to fans as he continues to battle bowel cancer.
Cryne stepped down from day-to-day duties at the club 10 months ago having rescued the Tykes from potential closure in 2004.
But having undergone chemotherapy and radiology treatment, it was revealed in May his illness was terminal. He used last night’s Carabao Cup tie against Derby, which Barnsley won 3-2, to thank fans with a message that feels very much like a goodbye. In his programme notes, he wrote: “I am living on borrowed time. I live in pain, but living is better than the alternative. Cancer is insidious, cruel and rapacious and I implore everyone to have regular checks to stop it gaining hold.
“This season, I think we will get stronger as it goes on. I do not expect to live to see the outcome but I travel in hope.”
Barnsley will now play Spurs at Wembley in the third round.
