Mown down by a lout on a mobility scooter

- By Giles Sheldrick

Straight on...the man fails to swerve, sending his victim sprawling, right THIS is the moment a frail pensioner is sent tumbling to the floor after she was hit by a reckless mobility scooter driver.

A distressing CCTV clip shows a white-haired woman in her 80s crash to the pavement as she is struck from behind by the fourwheeled motorised buggy.

The video emerged on the internet yesterday and was taken from a surveillance camera in Southend, Essex.

It was posted in an attempt to track down the driver.

In the 60-second clip a man wearing sunglasses can be seen driving his scooter along the pavement but makes little attempt to avoid the woman who is walking towards a pedestrian crossing.

The lady, who walks with a stoop and is seen carrying a bag in her right hand, is struck in the legs and falls towards the road before shocked eyewitnesses rush to help her. The man also jumps from his scooter to assist her.

The person who uploaded the video to YouTube said: “He then seems to play innocent and attempt with the group of passers by to pick her up.”

The Highway Code states priority on pavements should be given to pedestrians, particularly those with a hearing or visual impairment. It adds that powered wheelchairs and scooters must not travel faster than 4mph on pavements or in pedestrianised areas.

Police confirmed inquiries were “ongoing to establish whether any offences had been committed”.

A spokesman said: “Police attended a collision between a pedestrian and a mobility scooter in Southchurch Road, Southend, just after 3.10pm on Saturday, September 9. The pedestrian, a woman aged in her 80s, did not require hospital treatment at the scene but was taken to hospital the following day for further checks.”
