Ellis still dreaming of fairy-tale finale

- Ross Heppenstall

GARETH ELLIS enjoyed a fairytale farewell on home soil by scoring the matchwinning try for Hull in a dramatic encounter.

The veteran Black and Whites skipper will retire at the end of the season to bring down the curtain on a glorious career.

With eight minutes remaining last night and the scores tied at 12-12 in Hull’s final home game of the season, he was on hand to dive over the line and send Lee Radford’s men a step closer to Old Trafford.

make it 19-12 only for Wakefield to ensure a dramatic finish as Mason Cayton-Brown went over for a late try.

That was converted and Liam Finn almost snatched the draw in the dying seconds only for his drop goal attempt to fly inches wide.

Trinity had stormed into an early 10-0 lead. Finn’s high kick was fielded by Ben JonesBishop back to former centre Joe Arundel, scampered over.

They added a second through Jacob Miller and Finn added the simple conversion to make it 10-0 before Hull gradually woke up and fashioned an impressive response.

They scored in the 28th minute when Sneyd kicked superbly to the right corner and winger Mahe Fonua outjumped and outmuscled CatonBrown to catch the Hull who ball and touch converted.

Moments later, Hull full-back Jamie Shaul was sinbinned for cynically preventing Miller from playing the ball, with Finn kicking the resulting penalty to make it 12-6.

But the hosts held firm when down to 12 men and they were level in the 49th minute when Sneyd collected a pass from Albert Kelly and raced clear to score with a fine finish which Sneyd converted to make it 12-12. down. Sneyd
