Soak up a vital supplement

- By George Nichols

MANY health issues that we take for granted such as low energy levels, poor sleep, irritability and regular headaches could all be down to one thing – a lack of magnesium. This powerful mineral is a vital component in the body’s daily functions – more than any other mineral.

As well as building strong bones, magnesium is essential for heart health, the proper working of our muscles and helping control blood pressure and blood sugar. It also works alongside vitamin D to ensure calcium gets into our bones.

We now need to be aware of our magnesium intake more than ever – our modern fast-food diet means that our intake has fallen to a level never seen before.

Magnesium can be found in a variety of foods (such as dark green vegetables, nuts, seeds and wholegrains), but it is difficult to guarantee a healthy amount.

More than 70 per cent of people in the UK have low magnesium levels, according to research by the laboratory Mineral Check. And the Government’s National Diet and Nutrition Survey revealed that the majority of children and adolescents fail to get the recommended daily allowance, with 53 per cent of teenage girls showing levels of gross deficiency.

Magnesium supplements are important for many people yet the mineral is poorly absorbed when taken orally – and too much can have you rushing to the toilet. The answer is for it to be absorbed through the skin. It is something that has been pioneered by cutting-edge health supplement developer Better You (betteryou.com).

A study published in the European Journal for Neutraceutical Research has shown that magnesium absorbed through the skin works five times faster than tablets. The mineral gets taken in through the pores, directly into the blood vessels and muscles.

The company offers a range of magnesium products, including sprays, gel, body butter and lotion, bath flakes and soaks.

Its collection of Magnesium Oil sprays help contribute to improved sleep and increased sports performance and its Original and Recovery versions have been recognised by Informed Sport, the sports nutrition testing organisation.

Other body applications are Magnesium Gel for targeted application and a luxurious Magnesium Body Lotion and Body Butter, which also includes shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil and vitamin E.

The natural relaxing properties combine well with more traditional soothing body treatments to produce something both sensuous and health-giving.

There is also a pair of bath time goodies, Magnesium Oil Soak and Magnesium Flakes, perfect for a footbath or a full-body laze.

Magnesium is vital for our wellbeing and because we cannot absorb enough of it from our daily diet, a supplement that gets straight to where it is needed is the way to recharge our systems.
