be edging closer to the octogenari­an stage of life but don’t expect Question Time king pin David Dimbleby to be reaching for the pipe and slippers just yet, with the man who turns 79 next month insisting he intends to continue.

“I will carry on as long as I am asked. Whenever I am asked to do something I will do it,” David, who is also the Beeb’s go-to man for general elections, told the audience at the annual Dimbleby Cancer Care fundraiser, held at Rooms on Regent’s Park. And it seems that having given the BBC over half a century of sterling service he now feels he can get away with a bit more. Making reference to his phone going off during an episode of Question Time in July he added: “It was my bed-time alarm. The BBC love that kind of thing. I never get a slap on the wrist.”
