Britain’s best bargain... a house for £1

- By Robert Kellaway

THIS three-storey semi could be the cheapest house in Britain.

The once grand stone-built property is going to auction next month with a guide price of just £1.

True, it needs a little TLC. The rooms are strewn with rubbish, there are holes in the ceilings and the staircase is on the point of collapse.

The house is damp from leaking pipes and the overgrown garden resembles a dumping ground.

But a building attached to the back of the property in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, hints at its former status – it used to be the servants’ quarters. The vendor, from London, who wishes to remain anonymous, lived in the house as a child.

“My father was a vet and I remember customers arriving with their sick pets,” she said.

After lying empty the house has become a target for vandals.

Auction House Scotland said: “With a guide of £1 and no reserve this is a unique opportunity to restore this building to its former glory.”
