Fury title vow after ‘torture’

- CHRIS McKENNA

HUGHIE FURY fights for a world heavyweight title tonight – 17 months after he was ready to quit the sport after a debilitating case of acne.

The cousin of former world champion Tyson takes on WBO holder Joseph Parker at Manchester Arena. The unbeaten Manchesterborn fighter has opened up on how sick the condition left him as he pondered quitting following his 2016 victory over Fred Kassi.

“I had come to the point where I thought me and boxing was over, that I would never achieve anything and I couldn’t beat anyone,” said Fury, 23. “We went to see a skin specialist in Harley Street and I was diagnosed as having a rare form of acne and it was poisoning my blood.

“I’d had it since I was 14 years old. Over the years it was just getting worse. “There were even times during fights I’d come over all dizzy, get back to the dressing room and spew my guts up.

“It made me so depressed, it would make me go to sleep for three or four days at a time. I was so down because I thought my dream was over.

“It was torture but thank God all of that is behind me now and I can just move forward.” BRITON Jermaine Eluemunor has laughed off his Baltimore Ravens team-mate Ronnie Stanley’s claim that he is the biggest football fan on the team.

Stanley, who will be facing the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley tomorrow, said: “If there are American football games on TV and there’s a good soccer game on, I’m watching the soccer game, 1,000 per cent.” But Arsenal supporter Eluemunor, who is set for his first start, said: “I grew up watching football. He just got into it.” RORY McILROY feels the PGA Tour will one day merge with the European Tour as it is “counter-productive” for them to compete against each other.

The four-time Major winner, who tees up in the British Masters next week, said: “The World Tour – it’s going to happen one day and I believe it has to.

“To have all these tours competing against each other, and having to change dates, it’s counterproductive. Everyone has to come together.” Backs:
