Klopp will stand by clueless defenders

JURGEN KLOPP says his under-fire defence will keep taking the blows until they get it right.

Liverpool clinched a nail-biting victory at Leicester thanks to keeper Simon Mignolet, who saved a Jamie Vardy penalty.

Manager Klopp said: “I like this team. Maybe nobody else likes it, but I want to improve it together.

“Sometimes you need a punch in the face and we’ve already had a few. Not too hard. Man City was hard. That was the only one.

“We were not really on the floor but we always got up. We play good football. I like the shape.

“It’s obvious we concede too much. That’s hard for me. Usually I’m a really good defensive coach but obviously that works not too good so far, but we will be fine.

“I don’t know everything about football but I could write a book in the next two hours about which space we have to defend, why, when and where you have to be, when you have to step up, push up, all that stuff. That’s no problem, but you have to do it.”

Vardy said he was outfoxed by Mignolet, who guessed that Vardy was going to blast his 71st-minute penalty down the middle.

The Belgian keeper said: “He has scored two penalties like that recently. I just tried to stay up.”

Vardy said: “I’ve always told myself never change your mind. I was going to change but didn’t. More fool me.”

While Mignolet’s save was vital, it was Philippe Coutinho who lit up the match. He set up Mo Salah’s opener, scored the second with a free-kick and had a hand in the third by Jordan Henderson.
