Mum hid tot’s body in drain

- By Paul Jeeves

A MOTHER who dumped the body of her “unwanted” baby son in a drain at her parents’ house has been jailed for a year.

HR executive Sinead Connett, 29, told police she had been raped by a taxi driver and kept the pregnancy a secret in case her partner left her. It was in fact the couple’s.

The tiny corpse was found in a drain at the home of her parents in Grimsby, Lincs, in February last year.

Connett claimed the baby had died when she secretly gave birth in the bath of her home in August 2013. Jeremy Evans, prosecuting at Grimsby Crown Court, said Connett’s parents, teachers Stuart and Anne Connett, had called plumber Joe Hiatt to check a drain blockage.

He and Mr Connett discovered the baby wrapped in bin liners. The Connetts had no idea they were looking at their grandson.

Tests showed the baby – who Connett named William – had died on August 6 or 7, 2013. His injuries including a fractured skull may have been caused when his body was retrieved.

Humberside Police matched blood on the towel in which he was wrapped to Connett’s DNA.

She told officers the baby had not been breathing. She had tried to resuscitate him before driving to her parents’ house but “panicked” on discovering they were out, she said.

Mr Evans said police had found Connett to lack “remorse or concern” about her baby son.

Mitigating, Nigel Sloane, said Connett “will have to live with this for the rest of her life”.

Jailing her, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC said Connett was the “architect of this appalling, appalling scenario”.
