May: We’ve set aside £250m to prepare for life outside the EU
Others have pressed for Mrs May to sack her Chancellor and replace him with a Brexit enthusiast.
Mr Hammond risked fuelling their criticism yesterday by warning that “uncertainty” about Brexit was slowing the economy.
“The cloud of uncertainty is acting as a temporary damper and we need to remove it as soon as possible by making progress with the negotiation process,” he said.
Senior Tory Bernard Jenkin hit back at his gloomy predictions, saying: “Some of the mixed messages coming out of the Cabinet are the source of the greatest uncertainty when it comes to Brexit.”
He told BBC Two’s Daily Politics show he was “very pleased to see the Prime Minister making absolutely clear” that Whitehall departments would have the money they needed to deal with no deal.
He said: “She’s cleared up some of the ambiguity that the Chancellor left, yes, how can I put it more diplomatically than that?”
