Why Prue can’t watch Bake Off

-

SHE may welcome the increased fame that has come with hosting Bake Off but Prue Leith says it has also left her feeling more selfconscious about her looks.

The 77-year-old tells Day & Night at the star-studded Specsavers Spectacle Wearer Of The Year Awards 2017: “I quite like the [higher profile] but on the downside all I think about now is how I look. I ask the cameramen on the show why they have to film me from so many unflattering angles.

“So when I’m meant to be concentrating on the baking, I’m distracted by what they’re doing and how I’ll end up looking with my double chins.”

Prue, who was honoured at the annual London ceremony for her inimitable specs-appeal, also tells us that because of her appearance, the hit Channel 4 baking show is not on her viewing list. “I can’t watch Bake Off as I can’t stand to see myself on it. My husband [John Playfair] will watch but I don’t stay in the room,” she adds.

Despite her worries, Prue ensured she had all eyes on her at the bash in her bold Asian-inspired ensemble with its eye-catching colours.

The cook rubbed shoulders with 1960s fashion icon Twiggy, actor Martin Kemp and presenter Lisa Snowdon. The X Factor’s Louis Walsh attended as a guest judge to decide on awards that celebrate ordinary specs wearers – in aid of anti-bullying charity Kidscape.

Former Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle provided the entertainment, performing her new solo single Go To Work and assuring guests that she was singing live following accusations the day before that she mimed the track on ITV’s Lorraine.
