SPURS HAIL HERO HUGO

- Gary Chappell

TOTTENHAM had Hugo Lloris to thank last night for winning them a point against Real Madrid at the Bernebeu.

The Spurs goalkeeper made a series of breathtaking saves, most notably from Karim Benzema’s close-range header and a fierce shot from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Tottenham went ahead in the first half when Raphael Varane put through his own net under pressure from striker Harry Kane. But Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot after Serge Aurier brought down Toni Kroos.

Kane missed a golden chance to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes remaining, with his shot saved by Keylor Navas.

Spurs remain joint top of Group H, on the same points as Madrid, who they host in their next Champions League game on November 1.

Kane said: “Hugo pulled off some amazing saves. We played well and we made it tough for them. It shows how far we’ve come and shows we can handle things at this level.”

Lloris added: “I was a bit surprised with the penalty but we have to trust the referee.” GABRIEL JESUS and Raheem Sterling continued their hot streaks as Manchester City eased past Napoli. Goalkeeper Ederson saved one penalty but was beaten from another by Napoli’s Amadou Diawara. LIVERPOOL moved to the top of Group E as two goals apiece for Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah saw them thrash Maribor. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Philippe Coutinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold also scored.
