Staveley calls Toon

EVERTON BRAWL BOYS LOSE OUT IN BATTLE

- Tony Paskin Gary Chappell

FINANCIER Amanda Staveley has begun due diligence into Newcastle’s books as excitement builds on Tyneside about a possible takeover.

Toon owner Mike Ashley put the club up for sale shortly after Staveley attended the match against Liverpool a fortnight ago, and she has now signed a non-disclosure agreement with Newcastle on behalf of PCP Partners Group, whom she manages.

They are examining the club’s finances along with four other parties interested in buying out Ashley.

While supporters are keen to celebrate the end of Ashley’s EVERTON captain Ashley Williams let his side’s struggles get the better of him as he sparked a mass Europa League brawl.

Williams barged into Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes in the second half with Everton trailing 1-0 – and the melee which ensued saw players from both sides brawling as they spilled into the crowd.

Quite how Dutch referee Bas Nijhuis saw the incident as only a booking is anyone’s guess, with Lyon’s Bertrand Traore also shown a yellow card. Lyon had led through Nabil Fekir’s penalty but, after the fight, Williams then equalised. Everton’s hopes vanished, however, when Traore netted the winner, piling more pressure on Blues boss Ronald Koeman. Arsenal top their group after a wonder goal from Olivier Giroud, right, saw off Red Star Belgrade.
