Shinji shines in back-to-basics win

- ALEX BYWATER

THIS was Leicester’s second league win of the season and it was handed to them on a plate.

Craig Shakespeare’s axing as boss left Michael Appleton in charge at the Liberty Stadium and, while the Foxes were deserved victors, Swansea were awful.

A Federico Fernandez own-goal and Shinji Okazaki’s second-half effort meant Appleton went home happy despite Alfie Mawson netting for the hosts.

“This period has been a bit embarrassing for us with

our poor results and then being without our manager,” said Okazaki, who excelled behind striker Jamie Vardy.

“We just decided to keep things very simple and play one-touch football where we pass and move. It worked.

“My goal was a moment where I knew I would score as soon as the ball came to me. I could feel that it was my moment in the game.” Leicester skipper Wes Morgan said: “Michael told us to ignore all the antics off the field and just focus on the game. At the end of the day we have no control over what happens off the pitch in terms of the management, so all we can show is how good we are.

“It’s about time we started putting some more points on the board. It was more like the Leicester of old. We scored the goals at the right times and even showed some resilience to concede a goal but still see the game out.” Mawson pulled one back for the Swans but it was not enough. Unless they find any sort of home consistency, Swansea will continue to struggle.

Swansea left-back Martin Olsson said: “There’s a lot of frustration and of course we were angry after the game. I don’t think we came up to the standard, especially in the first half, but we can’t be too negative and hopefully things will turn around.”
