Renée playing Judy such a wizard idea

- EDITED BY JACK TEAGUE WITH DOMINIQUE HINES

RENÉE ZELLWEGER is to take on the coveted role of Hollywood icon Judy Garland.

The 48-year-old will star in biopic, Judy, being made by British stage director and Tony Award nominee Rupert Goold.

The film is set in 1968 – 30-years after the late star played her most famous role of Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz – when Judy arrived in London to perform a sell-out five-week run at the Talk Of The Town nightclub.

It was an eventful time for Judy who despite battling bitterly with management still was able to charm musician Mickey Deans, who went on to became her fifth husband.

The film will sharpen Renée’s acting chops who only last year reprised her role as Bridget Jones following a six-year sabbatical, and would more than likely put her in the frame in the Best Actress category for an Oscar.

The film will portray the fragility of the actress-and-singer who at that point had been working for an incredible 45 years and was haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood while longing to be at home with her own children, including Liza Minnelli.

Renée, who has already proven she can hold a note after her celebrated performance as Roxie Hart in the 2002 musical film Chicago, will also be tasked with singing some of the most beloved songs of the tragic actress.

Filming is set to begin in early 2018.
