Mother facing murder trial after tot’s plunge

- By Alastair Taylor

A MOTHER-of-two appeared in court yesterday charged with murdering her 18-month-old son who fell to his death from a sixthfloor flat.

Gemma Procter, 23, cried loudly as she was brought into court and was given tissues by two women security escorts.

She spoke only to confirm her name, age and date of birth and to indicate she understood the charge against her.

Toddler Elliot Procter fell to his death from Newcastle House block of flats in the centre of Bradford, West Yorkshire, on Saturday.

During her 10-minute appearance at Bradford magistrates court, Procter wore a prisonissue grey tracksuit.

No plea was formally entered but Sajad Chaudhury, defending, indicated that Procter denies the charge.

The court heard West Yorkshire Police’s investigations into the death continue.

A member of Procter’s family shouted “love you babe” from the public gallery as she was led away.

Outside court, Mr Chaudhury said: “Our thoughts are with the family and with all those people living in Newcastle House.

“The events of October 21 will Procter was remanded in custody affect them for a long time. We would invite any witnesses who live in the block of apartments or any witnesses who were in the area on any floor to contact the police.

“We would like to especially speak to any witnesses on the fifth, sixth and seventh floors.

“Anyone who saw anything is urged to contact the police. This will hopefully assist the investigation going forward.”

Procter was remanded in custody until tomorrow, when she will appear at Bradford Crown Court. The balcony from where Elliot fell
