Court no-show for uncle of Duchess on assault charge

THE Duchess of Cambridge’s uncle failed to appear in court yesterday on a charge of assaulting his wife.

Gary Goldsmith, 52, tried to obtain a caution from magistrate­s in an applicatio­n by his lawyer.

But the request was rejected by prosecutor­s and he will now have to appear in court on November 14.

Goldsmith, estimated to be worth £30million, is said to have attacked Julie-Ann Goldsmith, 47, outside their home in London in the early hours of October 13.

The couple had spent the evening at a private members’ club before returning to their house in Marylebone, where they allegedly started arguing.

Police were called to the scene at 1.24am and arrested Goldsmith. Mrs Goldsmith was then taken to hospital for her injuries and was later discharged. Goldsmith was charged with assault by beating, which carries a maximum six-month jail term or unlimited fine. He was due to appear at Westminste­r magistrate­s’ court. But he failed to show after being told he was not required by his legal team. He remains on bail. Goldsmith, who lives in a street where the average home is worth £2.5million, made his fortune from a recruitmen­t empire. He is the brother of Carole Middleton.
