Lungworm fear for dogs after rise in garden slugs
VETS yesterday warned dog owners of a growing threat from a potentially deadly parasite.
Lungworm cases are expected to rocket in the coming weeks after weather conditions led to a population boom among snails and slugs.
The garden pests can carry lungworm larvae, which dogs pick up by accidentally eating the slugs, or from water or pet toys contaminated with their slime.
Puppies are especially at risk from lungworm which can cause weight loss, a cough and difficulty breathing, but symptoms can be difficult to spot at first.
Regular medication protects against the parasite and it is treatable if caught early.
The British Pest Control Association said more than 150 cases have been reported since February, with nine deaths including an 11-week-old puppy.
Mark Bossley, chief vet at national pet charity Blue Cross, said: “All dogs are at risk of becoming infected with lungworm.
“Owners of young dogs need to be particularly vigilant.
“It’s not enough to just be aware, though.
“Owners need to take action by ensuring that they are protecting their pet with a product that is proven to be effective against lungworm – and using it regularly.”
