A MAN was arrested yesterday after nine dismembered corpses were discovered at his home.

Shaken police officers found at least two severed heads and body parts stuffed in coolboxes in the Japanese city of Zama, 25 miles south-west of Tokyo.

Takahiro Shiraishi, 27, told police he chopped up the bodies of eight women and a man in the bathroom. A saw and toolbox were found in the two-storey flat.

Other body parts including arms and legs were reportedly found in boxes or rubbish bins.

Police believe Shiraishi may have preyed on victims wishing to end their own lives who he found on suicide websites.

The alarm was raised after a 23-year-old woman was reported missing by worried relatives last week. The victim’s older brother called police after discovering his sister had been talking to the suspect on Twitter. The woman had posted a message saying she was looking for somebody who would die with her. She wrote: “I want to die, but doing so alone is terrible. I’m looking for someone to die with me.”

CCTV images showed the woman walking with a man near the suspect’s apartment.

Neighbours had noticed “odd smells” from August when Shiraishi moved in.

One said: “I thought it smelled like sewage. It was something I never smelled before.”
