The reel deal...my record carp was some-fin special, says lucky angler

- By John Chapman

THIS angler was left stunned after reeling in Britain’s biggest carp – having used white chocolate as bait.

Holding aloft the 68lb 8oz monster, Nigel Ludbrook, 49, is now set to take his place in the record books.

The giant fish, nicknamed Captain Jack, was 7oz heavier than the current UK record.

Nigel was fishing at the Holme Fen Fishery in Colne, Cambs, when the carp went for his unusual bait mix, which included white chocolate and krill. After weighing it Nigel had a photograph with the fish before returning it to the lake.

He then celebrated the catch with a beer and steak dinner.

The bricklayer from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, said: “When it first took my bait I could tell it was a good fish but I had no idea it would be the size it was. When it first came out of the water, I was shocked and shaking like a leaf.

“My previous best carp was 35lb. I’d never even seen a fish that size before. We pulled it out and my friend Richard helped me weigh it and take pictures before we threw it back. Once we’d finished me and Richard celebrated with a bottle of beer and a steak.

“I just feel lucky really. It just happened to be me that caught that fish at that weight.”

Nigel has confirmed he will submit the catch to the British Record Fish Committee, which will judge the claim.

A committee spokesman said: “We will judge it independently and on its own merits.”
