Wolves show staying power for Nuno

- Steve Madeley

LEO BONATINI scored for the sixth straight League game as Wolves shrugged off speculation about their head coach Nuno Espirito Santo to cruise four points clear at the top.

The Brazilian striker took his season’s tally to 10 after midfielder Romain Saiss had opened the scoring. Nuno, who has been linked with the Everton job, saw the excellent Barry Douglas lay on

both goals with fine set-piece deliveries.

Wolves had a sighter after eight minutes when Ruben Neves sent a 20-yard effort just wide. And they led just a minute later when Fulham gave Saiss a free run and jump, with the Moroccan accepting the invitation to power home a header.

Moments later, the visitors were undone again by a clever move but winger Diogo Jota sent his effort wide.

Wolves, though, did have a let-off in the 16th minutes when keeper John Ruddy spilled a Ryan Sessegnon free-kick. It dropped at the feet of former Wolves midfielder Kevin McDonald but he could only shoot over. Fulham looked for an equaliser through Floyd Ayite’s long-range effort but it gave Ruddy a simple catch and they found themselves 2-0 down after 27 minutes.

Again, it was an unchallenged header as Bonatini glanced home a free-kick.

When Fulham threatened in a goalmouth scramble with shots from Ayite and Neeskens Kebano, Wolves defenders Matt Doherty and Willy Boly made important blocks. In the second half, Bonatini scooped a shot just wide from a brilliant Ivan Cavaleiro pass before Ayite shot just off target for Fulham. David Button then made a superb save to deny Bonatini another headed goal.
