Aguero hinting at early return to Argentina

- RICHARD TANNER

SERGIO AGUERO has again created confusion about his future at Manchester City.

Aguero declared in an interview in Argentina that he plans to return to his first club Independiente in Buenos Aires when his contract at the Etihad runs out in 2019.

But City insist they have already triggered a one-year option to tie their record goalscorer to the club until 2020. Aguero said: “The idea was always to go back to Independiente when my contract runs out in 2019. I have an option to extend for one more year with City.

“Now, I’m doing very well and hopefully we can win the Champions League but it’s not easy.”

Last week, after becoming City’s record scorer with his goal in the Champions League win over Napoli, 29-year-old Aguero, left, was asked about when his contract expired and said: “I don’t know, I don’t remember – 2019 I think, I have to check again.” City sources insist, however, it runs to 2020. Meanwhile, City are matching their runaway success on the pitch by posting record revenues off it.

The Premier League leaders, eight points clear at the top, brought in £473.4million last season – an impressive 21 per cent increase on the previous year.

It is the ninth successive year of improved financial performance since Abu Dhabi billionaire Sheikh Mansour bought the club in 2008.
