Widow burgled while at funeral of her husband

-

A WIDOWED pensioner returned home from her husband’s funeral to find burglars had broken in.

The thieves targeted Sylvia Barlow’s house shortly after the hearse left for the service for Peter, her husband of 46 years.

They ransacked nearly every wardrobe upstairs and stole several cherished keepsakes, leaving Mrs Barlow feeling “rock bottom”.

The break-in happened last Wednesday between 2.30pm and 8.30pm during Mr Barlow’s funeral and wake at a nearby pub.

After smashing a back patio window to get in the house in Sheffield, the burglars made off with three rings, earrings, and two bracelets. One of the bracelets held special value for Mrs Barlow, 68, as her late husband bought it when they were on holiday in Turkey.

She said: “It’s just insult on top of insult. I could not believe this had happened at a time like this.”

Her son Andrew Smart says he is sure the raiders knew the family were at a funeral. He said: “How could anyone be so rotten as to do this on someone’s funeral day?”
