Politician’s wife found him hanged

-

SACKED Welsh Labour minister Carl Sargeant was discovered hanged in his utility room, an inquest heard yesterday.

The 49-year-old Assembly Member since 2003, was found by his wife last Tuesday at their home in Connah’s Quay, North Wales.

He died just days after Welsh Labour leader Carwyn Jones controversially sacked him over three women’s unsubstantiated “improper conduct” claims.

Yesterday as his inquest was opened, coroner John Gittins said the father-of-two died in “an apparent act of self harm”.

The 10-minute hearing in Ruthin, North Wales, heard Mr Sargeant was found by his wife Bernadette, 48.

The inquest – not attended by his widow or children – heard the politician put a note on the door urging her not to enter but to call the police.

Mr Gittins said he must now discover whether Mr Sargeant intended to take his own life.

He would also need to hear what “mental welfare” support – if any – was given to him by Mr Jones, the Labour Party and the Welsh Assembly.

The inquest was adjourned.
