Earlier this year only diplomatic immunity kept her out of court in her native South Africa after she allegedly attacked a model there, hitting her with a plug at the end of a lead.

Eight years ago a British photograph­er claimed he was punched by her in Hong Kong while her bodyguards held his arms. Last night Zimbabwe’s army claimed she was under its control, contradict­ing rumours she had fled to Namibia.

Mugabe has clearly lost his absolute grip on power and at best will become a puppet of the forces he used to control. His brutal rule, muddled Marxist dogma, vote-rigging and racist treatment of the white settlers turned Zimbabwe from a buoyant economy to a basket case. But while ordinary citizens struggle to make ends meet, Mugabe and his henchmen are suspected of helping themselves to the state’s wealth, including its diamond deposits.

One Harare shopkeeper said: “I don’t support the army but I am happy to see Mugabe gone, maybe this country can start to develop again. I did not think this would ever happen... We used to think Mugabe Grace were invincible.”

But British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson warned that the final outcome is not clear.

He told MPs: “Nobody wants simply to see the transition from one unelected tyrant to a next. No one wants to see that. We want to see proper, free and fair elections.” and
