I have got my £20 lost in a cashpoint back... 10 years on
A MAN who left a £20 note in a bank cash machine by mistake has finally got the money back – 10 years on, plus interest.
Council worker Steve Titman, 34, was astonished to receive a cheque for the amount along with £6.80 interest.
He had left the note in a Lloyds cashpoint in Peterborough in early 2008.
But Steve admits he has no recollection of the mishap.
Steve, whose account is with NatWest, said: “It was a complete shock but very welcome.
“I will be putting it towards my Christmas shopping.
“I have no recollection of leaving the money in the cashpoint.
“I think I was most surprised that this dated back to 2008.
“It was a Friday when I was a bit younger and probably went out on the town a bit more.
“I have to say thank you to NatWest for checking my records.”
Money withdrawn from ATMs automatically goes back into the machine if it is not collected.
Several high street banks now run refunding schemes, ensuring customers who do not pick up money from an ATM have it automatically refunded into their accounts.
Thousands of customers are thought to be affected, with RBS and HSBC facing a combined estimated cost of £18million in reimbursing people, dating back to 2005.
Steve, who works for Peterborough City Council, added: “I have never heard of this before.
“I am a bit annoyed it was not credited to my account [in 2008], but I am happy to get a windfall in time for Christmas.”
Interest on the £20 came to £8.50, with £1.70 deducted for tax, leaving Steve with a net profit of £6.80 – and a 10-year wait.
