PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Comedy: Have I Got News For You, 9pm, BBC1

Of all the guest presenters to have taken on the role since the high-profile departure of Angus Deayton years ago, Stephen Mangan (left) has been one of the best, able to deal with four rambunctious panellists and any barbs that fly his way. The actor is back again tonight and he welcomes Watchdog presenter Steph McGovern to the show, knowing he will have to be on his toes with team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton around.

Soap: Coronation Street, 7.30pm & 8.30pm, ITV

Phelan (Connor McIntyre, above left) is in the money tonight when his insurance money arrives. Anna watches suspiciously as he goes on to hand Billy a wad of cash for the church fund before setting about giving all the people who lost money on the Calcutta flats £5k each by way of compensation. There are tough times in store for Robert, firstly he heads to the casino before later going out of his way to hide the extent of his woes.

Food and drink: Jamie And Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast, 8pm, C4

Looking back over the first four series of this show, there are quite a few dishes that stick in our mind. Usain Bolt’s jerk pork from the very first episode looked sensational, the Goan curry that Kate Hudson helped rustle up was sublime and we cannot tell you how appealing Lindsay Lohan’s New York Pie was. Anyway, the good news is that not only is the show back for a new series but they have made 12 episodes, four more than the last run. The honour of being guest number one in series five falls to Simon Pegg, who works with Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty (both left, with Pegg) on a melt-in-the mouth lamb tagine, inspired by his time spent filming in Morocco.

Documentary: Extreme Wives With Kate Humble, 9pm, BBC2

Kate Humble’s examination of the role of women around the world has been truly eye-opening and it is such a pity that this is the final part of her travels. The host (above centre) ends things in Shillong, India, where the Khasi people practise a matrilineal way of life where everything, including property and the family name, is passed down the female line.

The Graham Norton Show, 10.35pm, BBC1

It seems hard to believe but in the 10 years of The Graham Norton Show the host has never had Hollywood megastar Mel Gibson on as a guest. Until tonight, that is. The Braveheart star is also joined by Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg (right) and award-winning stage and screen star John Lithgow. Plus, singer-songwriter Kesha is on hand to perform her new single, Learn to Let Go. NB: 11.05PM IN ULSTER
