Superfit mum dies on first jog after she has baby son

- By Anil Dawar

A NEW mother died after her first jog since giving birth, an inquest heard.

Louise Smith, 34, who had a karate black belt and did triathlons, was super fit. But six months after having her son Joshua, she collapsed just 50 yards into a run.

She knew she had a heart condition but medics at Bristol Heart Institute had told her it was a benign defect.

She had been taken there for tests after fainting while pregnant.

Avon Coroner’s Court heard this week that rehabilitation counsellor Ms Smith had arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopthaty and that it caused her death.

Dr Glyn Thomas and Dr Stephanie Curtis, consultant cardiologists at the heart institute, told the inquest they had believed that Ms Smith’s life was not at risk.

She gave birth to Joshua in May 2016. In November, she went to her Triathlete Louise Smith with partner Gareth Prust and their son Joshua stepfather John Davis’s house and he joined her in her first jog since being given the all-clear by medics.

Within minutes, Ms Smith, of Weston-super-Mare, complained of tiredness and told him they needed to slow down.

She had a seizure and was rushed by ambulance to hospital, where she died.

Her partner Gareth Prust “She was an amazing woman.

“In the short time she had, she was an amazing mum.”

The coroner recorded a verdict of death by natural causes. said:
