The smart solution

Suzy and John Monty have said goodbye to estimated bills after upgrading their energy meter

-

For Suzy Monty and her husband John, upgrading their energy meter to a smart meter was a small change which made a big difference to their lives. In fact, the couple from Truro, Cornwall, have been so pleased with their smart meter that they’ve already recommended it to family and friends.

“When I’ve spoken to friends who are considering upgrading to a smart meter, I’ve told them to go for it,” says 66-year-old Suzy.

“I can understand that sometimes people don’t like change. My husband refuses to use a computer, no matter how much I try to persuade him,” she laughs.

“But it didn’t take long to get used to the new meter, and it’s made our lives much simpler.”

Now Suzy and John, 70, no longer worry about getting a shock when their bill arrives. Estimated bills have become a thing of the past, because their smart meter sends readings directly to their energy supplier.

“I think it’s a brilliant idea because we no longer have to guess how much we’ve spent each month and we needn’t worry that we’re going to be in the red,” she says.

And now they have a monitor in their kitchen which tells them how much energy they’re using in near real-time.

“It’s brilliant because now we have a monitor which tells us exactly how much we’re using and what it costs. It’s not intrusive – it’s only a tiny little thing so it just sits on the worktop and it tells the time as well.

“But to be able to assess how much you’re spending a month is brilliant for pensioners like us because every penny counts these days.”

Now Suzy and John couldn’t be happier that their energy supplier told them about smart meters.

“We were sent a letter by our supplier and they offered us a free installation – it sounded too good to be true, so I took them up on their offer.

“The chap came to install it and within a couple of hours, it was up and running.

“Now we can’t imagine not having one.”
