Two Britons hurt as dance floor collapses at club
TWO Britons were among 40 people hurt when a dance floor collapsed at a popular nightclub in Tenerife early yesterday.
Revellers plunged 10 feet into the basement of the Butterfly Disco Pub, a gay club in Playa de las Americas, as the floor gave way just after 2.30am.
Officials said the two British men, aged 57 and 59, were taken to hospital, the older man suffering a broken bone in his lower body.
No one had life-threatening injuries. Authorities believe more Britons may have been caught up in the incident. Firefighters searched through the debris to make sure no one was trapped after falling through the 40 sq ft hole. Some were treated on the street outside.
One Spanish reveller said: “I was in a club near the Butterfly called the Papagayo when I took a call from a friend there saying, ‘Please come and help me’.
“Apparently the floor of the nightclub broke in half and people plunged into the basement below.”
An emergency services spokesman said: “There may be other British and Irish casualties but we are still collating information from the hospitals.”
The second British victim suffered a head injury and was taken to Tenerife’s capital Santa Cruz for treatment. His condition is not serious.
Local mayor Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga said there was no suggestion the incident was caused by too many people in the nightclub.
