Gunners find a way

-

and Johann Berg Gudmundsson came close to opening the scoring for the Clarets with a shot that Petr Cech touched onto a post.

There was also a fine Cech save later in the first half to keep out a Brady free-kick as Arsenal were limited to operating on the counter-attack, an Alexandre Lacazette cross which Ramsey shot high over the bar being their best opening.

But after the restart Arsenal began to assert control and only supreme defending from Tarkowski and Ben Mee – who must have caught the eye of watching England manager Gareth Southgate – kept them at bay. Gunners substitute Jack Wilshere might have won the game 10 minutes from time when he exchanged a pass with Sanchez but saw a promising shot deflected behind off Tarkowski.

The defender blotted his copybook soon after and, while Burnley manager Sean Dyche fully accepted there had been contact, he questioned whether his underdogs would have been given the benefit of such a decision.

“There was no problem with Ramsey at all,” said Dyche. “That was a smash in the back compared to what most people go down with in this division. There was a definite nudge in the back.

“But I don’t think he was going to get the ball, it’s going over him. So probably it gets given but we’ve had a lot not given like that. I don’t know why.

“The bigger clubs seem to get the decisions, I’m not sure if that’s a fact.

“You have to be clear, only because it’s unlikely he’s ever going to get there, so when is a foul a foul?”
