EU deal is a heavy price but we have to move on

-

WE WISH we could offer the Prime Minister our whole-hearted congratulations on the deal that she has finally struck with the EU but it must be said that she and we are paying a very heavy price.

While we always accepted that we would have to settle our bill before achieving Brexit, £39billion is an enormous amount of money and that at a time when national finances are tight. However she has at least managed to preserve unity throughout that much more successful and important union, the UK, and we can at last move on to talks about a trade deal.

And there must be no wavering now. The coming months will be the most important in Britain’s history since the Second World War, setting the agenda for years ahead, and we must make sure that a deal is favourable to us. That includes protecting Britain’s financial sector, for France and Germany have made no secret that they would like Paris and Frankfurt to become world leaders in that area instead. They are highly unlikely to succeed but we must protect our most important industries.

We must also start repealing with all possible speed the EU legislation that has caused such huge dissatisfaction across the land.

On this page Tim Newark writes about the EU’s spiteful attempt to prosecute Eastern European countries who are refusing to accept imposed migration quotas, the issue that above all has caused Brexit.

Let the rest of the continent learn from this too.
