Labour MPs: Let’s have a second referendum

- By David Maddox Political Correspondent

LABOUR MPs want to plunge Britain into chaos with a “multi-option” second referendum on EU membership, it emerged yesterday.

Opening a debate on an online petition for a second EU referendum, Labour MP Susan Elan Jones demanded that the final deal be put to another vote but the electorate be allowed to choose between more than two options.

Ms Jones was supported by another Welsh MP, Geraint Davies.

He suggested older Leave voters have probably died since last year’s result and people who were 17 in 2016 are now old enough to change the outcome.

But Tory MPs warned that people are fed up with referendums and said that the push for another vote was coming from people who did not like the result last year wanting to ignore promises to implement it.

The Westminster Hall debate followed the submission of four e-petitions to Parliament, including one calling for a vote on the final deal reached by the UK Government with the EU.

Ms Jones repeated a Remainers’ claim that voters were not told the true facts about EU membership.

Tory MP Lee Rowley described Mr Davies’s comments as “absurd”.

He said: “The Government literature said this was a once in a generation vote, not a twice in a generation vote, and the Government would implement the result.”
