Woman dies after being hit by four hit-and-run vehicles

A WOMAN died after being struck by four separate hit-and run drivers at a pedestrian crossing on a busy junction dubbed “the race track” yesterday.

The motorists’ callous behaviour sparked fury after the unnamed victim – in her 20s or 30s – was struck by two lorries and two cars.

Scotland Yard detectives were seeking witnesses to the rush-hour accident and appealed for all four motorists to come forward.

Residents of Tulse Hill, south London, claim the roundabout on the South Circular Road is a hazard where cars tear round at terrifying speeds.

Navin Bagan, 37, who works at a nearby cafe, attacked the motorists as “heartless”, adding: “They just left her to die.

“This road is sometimes very busy in the mornings but that’s not an excuse for a car to hit a lady and run off.”

Businessman William Payne, 70, said: “If there’s not a lot of traffic people just put their toe down. There should be a speed camera to reduce speed.”

Olivia Cook, an operations manager, said on Twitter: “It’s the scariest junction to drive around... people drive at insane speeds and cut each other up.”

Richard Cann, tweeted: “This is a horrible road, cars always racing. How sad for the family and no one stopped? Despicable.”

Josh Harris, of road safety charity Break, said: “This is a truly shocking incident and our thoughts are with the family of the victim.

“We would urge a full and thorough investigation, including looking into whether the design of this junction could be improved.”

Scotland Yard said the accident took place shortly before 7am on Monday. Officers were still trying to formally identify the victim yesterday. London Ambulance Service said the woman had suffered a cardiac arrest.
