Teen taunted for ‘fake love life’ jailed over death crash

- By Paul Jeeves

A TEENAGER mocked when her fantasy love life was exposed as fake tried to take her own life by smashing her car head-on into another vehicle, but instead killed its driver.

Abigail Andrews, 19, is now behind bars after being sentenced this week to nine-and-a-half years for her reckless behaviour.

She ploughed her Nissan Juke into grandfather Andrew McKenna’s Renault Clio at speed after she lost her temper when friends mocked her for having a “make-believe lover” on Facebook.

Devastated

Mr McKenna, 60, died at the scene and his passengers Wayne Bratley and Christopher Parker were left with severe life-long injuries.

A jury at Derby Crown Court found Andrews guilty of manslaughter and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She was sentenced on Wednesday.

Andrews has never explained her actions. But Crown Prosecutor Janine Smith said: “Abigail deliberately caused a collision in an attempt to take her own life. Tragically, her actions resulted in the death of a much-loved husband and family man.” Mr McKenna’s devastated family slammed the teenager from Upper Newbold, Chesterfield, Derbys, for her “pathetic lies” about the crash.

In a statement they said she had “fabricated version after version of the truth”.

They continued: “She has robbed us of a loving and much-loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

“In the almost 18 months between the fatal collision and coming to trial, she has not once shown a shred of remorse for her actions. Not once.

“She thinks only of herself and has continued to drive and party as if nothing happened. For that, we cannot forgive her.”

The crash happened shortly after 10pm in June last year on a straight section of a country road.

Andrews, who was not seriously injured, drove her car intentionally into the path of Mr McKenna’s vehicle, her trial heard.

She claimed to police that she had swerved to avoid three children.

But eye witnesses told investigators her car was under full control and she confessed at the scene that she had crashed deliberately. Victim Andrew McKenna and killer driver Abigail Andrews. His family say she has shown no sign of remorse since causing the fatal accident
