Meryl responds to hypocrisy claims
MERYL STREEP has hit back at criticisms that she was complicit in the alleged sexual abuse of younger Hollywood actresses.
The triple Oscar-winner, 68, inset, penned an emotional open letter to actress Rose McGowan after the 44-yearold accused her of hypocrisy regarding disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein.
Rose, who alleges she was raped by Weinstein in 1997, tweeted: “Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black at the Golden Globes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly and affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy…”
Rose has since deleted the tweet but Meryl, who worked on banner headlines, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the 1990s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others. I wasn’t deliberately silent… I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening. I have never in my life been invited to his hotel room.”
She then added: “Rose assumed and broadcast something untrue about me, and I wanted to let her know the truth… I am truly sorry she sees me as an adversary… ”
Meryl concluded by saying that when she heard about the tweet she had hoped that Rose would get in touch so she could clarify, but she did not.
