RAF base ram raider is detained

Migrants turn tourism site into squalid camp

-

A MAN was detained under the Mental Health Act yesterday after a terror scare at an RAF base which saw US troops open fire on a car ramming a checkpoint.

Suffolk Police arrested the 44-year-old man after his vehicle crashed to a halt near an Osprey military plane when the US Air Force sentries blew out his tyres.

Witnesses said the driver had tried to smash his way into RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, which is used by Americans forces.

The British driver suffered cuts and bruises in Monday’s drama.

Sources said he had a teddy bear strapped to his chest. It is also understood he originally claimed to be from the US secret service.

Superintendent Kim Warner said neither the car nor the aircraft suffered “any significant damage” in the incident.

The base, which is due to shut in 2022, went into lockdown for two hours. faMously painted by British impressionist alfred sisley and sung about by Edith Piaf, this is Canal saint-Martin in Paris – now a camp for migrants heading for Britain.

The quays of the canal filled up with tents and bivouacs as other illegal camps across france were destroyed.

a local who asked to be known only as Maude said: “This used to be a big tourist area.

“The migrants are mainly young men – they use the canal as a toilet and leave masses of rubbish. The whole area stinks and feels very threatening.”

local charities provide food, clothes and tents to those arriving – many of them afghans who want to claim asylum in Britain.

Civil rights groups have reacted angrily to plans by President Macron to expel more migrants, especially failed asylum seekers “in an irregular situation”.
