I am ready to follow legends

- Ross Heppenstall

RICHIE MYLER is undaunted by the challenge of replacing Headingley legend Danny McGuire as he prepares to make his first appearance for Leeds today. The 27-year-old scrum-half has joined the Super League champions on a three-year deal and will play in their opening friendly at Wakefield. The Rhinos hope Myler can prove an effective creative fulcrum after McGuire joined Hull KR and Rob Burrow retired at the end of last season. The long-serving half-backs won eight Grand Finals, two Challenge Cups and three World Club Challenge titles at Leeds. Myler said: “Whoever came in after

Danny and Rob was always going to get compared to them because they’re great players, but I’m not too fazed by it. I’m looking forward to the challenge. I can’t wait to get out there against Wakefield now.”

Myler, who spent the past two seasons at Catalan Dragons after spells at Salford and Warrington which earned him England honours, will partner Australian Joel Moon.

He has put down roots in Leeds after setting up home there with his TV presenter wife, Helen SkeltonMyler, and their two young sons.

Myler moves to Headingley after a traumatic season with Catalans which almost saw them relegated.

“It was a very long season and the Million Pound Game was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced in my life,” Myler said. “I already knew I had my future sorted out at Leeds, but a lot of the Leigh players were left without a job.”

Myler has not played for his country since earning the last of his six Test caps in 2012, but he remains hopeful of returning to the fold.

Myler said: “I’ve always got ambitions to play for my country and if my form for Leeds warrants a recall then I’ll be very happy.

“My main focus is on doing a big job for Leeds and there is a winning culture here. It’s a very ambitious club, so I’m looking forward to hopefully playing a part in writing a few more chapters.”
