Exposed...the nosiest neighbours in Britain

- By Gillian Crawley

IT may not be a title any place would care to win, but the city with the nosiest neighbours in Britain has been revealed.

An incredible 84 per cent of residents in Coventry admit to snooping on their neighbours, according to the survey.

It might have won the contest to be the UK’s City of Culture for 2021, but a poll by home furnishings retailer Terry’s Fabrics has found that natives of the West Midlands city also indulge in rather less noble pastimes.

Wrexham came second, at 78 per cent, with Liverpool third, where 76 per cent admitted they loved to keep an eye on the people next door.

And contrary to popular belief, it seems young people are the most enthusiastic curtain-twitchers of all with 74 per cent of 18-24 year olds admitting to spying compared with 65 per cent of the over-55s.

Just over half of the regular snoopers enjoyed listening in to a juicy argument on the other side of the fence. And a fifth described revelling in the embarrassment of neighbours caught in the act of spying themselves. Meanwhile, a quarter of London curtain-twichers have caught their neighbours in flagrante and nine per cent have discovered an affair from strange carryings on witnessed next door.

Paul McGuiness, owner at Terry’s Fabrics, said: “People catch some astonishing sights.”
