Matt looking to play a blinder

- Harry Talbot

MATT SADLER is the wannabe Peaky Blinder hoping to put one over a London gang in the FA Cup tomorrow.

The Brummie defender gets ribbed by his Shrewsbury teammates who believe he has a resemblance to the TV show’s gang leader Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy.

Sadler is a big fan of the cult series centred around a notorious Twenties clan from his home town and would love a call to join the crew. For now though, he wants the

“My missus loves the character – and for a little while I was forced to have a similar haircut to him.

“A couple of months ago I asked one of the Birmingham City staff to see if they could have a word about getting a part in the fourth series which has just gone. My phone is ready.” The historic Shropshire town is buzzing with a sell-out gate of just short of 10,000 and a £140,000 TV money cheque.

Sadler says there is a bond among the Town side that has helped them go from pre-season relegation favourites to second spot.

“This team look after each other, which sounds gangsterish,” he said. “In terms of a togetherness we have, we want to win together and for each other. There is a grittiness about the group which we’ve needed. That is what will stand us in good stead.

“We work as hard as we can for each other and want to succeed for and with each other. When you have that it goes a long way.

“The town is behind us and there is a real buzz about the place. It has been a good Christmas period and first half of the season, which allows us to really attack this game as a free hit. I’m guessing the cameras are here because they like to think there could be a shock on the cards and they want an upset and it’s over to us on Sunday to try to produce a result.”

The game will see the return of local lad Joe Hart to the club who launched him on his way to become England’s top keeper.

Sadler said: “Joe’s a fantastic keeper. He has been out of the side and will be doing everything he can to get back into the team. He’s born and bred in this area. I’m sure it will be a nice moment for him because I’m not sure he has been back since he left.”
