A PINT of cider every day could be the secret to a long life, according to a war veteran who has just turned 100.

That and a generous stroke of luck, adds Joshua Kelly, of Exeter.

Mr Kelly was called up during the Second World War.

During his six years in the Royal Marines he served in places as diverse as Belgium, Egypt and Cyprus.

Celebrating his milestone birthday with a pint in his local, he was asked how he had reached so great an age. He said: “Cider, and I’ve been lucky. “Drinking cider every day could have done it – and running away from the enemy, the Germans.”

The former Marine, born in Bridgwater, Somerset, moved to Exeter after leaving the services and became a bricklayer. There was great call for skilled workers because of the extensive bomb damage the city suffered.

Once there he met his second wife, Edna, a widow. Mr Kelly already had a son called John from his first marriage, and Edna had twins. Then they had a daughter, Sandra.

John and Sandra were on hand to help Joshua celebrate turning 100 last week, with other family members and Exeter’s Lord Mayor Lesley Robson.

While the merits of cider may be contested, doctors suggest apple cider vinegar could help weight loss. In 2016, a study by Aston university in Birmingham found drinking the vinegar diluted can bring down blood sugar levels.
