FIVE EASY WAYS TO STOP SPLASHING OUT

-

1 Make an approved shopping list

Sometimes there are things you can’t avoid spending money on, such as replacing an item of clothing that is worn out or beyond repair. But make a list of no more than five items that you are allowed to buy.

2 Unsubscribe from newsletters

It’s always tempting when an email lands in your inbox about a sale or a new collection at your favourite shop. Avoid the pull of special offers by unsubscribing from all catalogues and newsletters.

3 Tell everyone you know

Confide in the people you spend most time with about your shopping ban. You’ll be far more likely to stick to it in the long term if your friends and family are there to make sure you stay on track.

4 Find free alternatives

One of the most pressing concerns about spending bans is what to do when people invite you out. Make a list of free or cheap things to do with friends that you can suggest as an alternative to shopping trips or expensive dinners, such as going for a walk or cooking at home.

5 Look for triggers

When you feel the urge to shop, pause and consider what’s happening in your current environment. How do you feel? Where are you? Who are you with? What are your justifications for shopping? Try to spot the emotions that trigger moments of weakness.
